The Bakehouse

NEXT EVENT AT THE DIGITAL BAKEHOUSE

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

Moniza Alvi and Caroline Smith

May 29th  7.15 for 7.30pm

The Bakehouse is thrilled to bring together this brace of award winning poets on our virtual stage. Boy are they impressive!  Caroline’s most recent poetry book, ‘The Immigration Handbook’ (Pub: Seren Books) was shortlisted for the 2016 Ted Hughes award and has been translated into Italian. She has twice been one of the winners in the prestigious Troubadour Competition. Moniza’s first collection The Country at My Shoulder (OUP, 1993) was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot and the Whitbread poetry prizes. Europa (Bloodaxe, 2008) and At the Time of Partition  (Bloodaxe, 2013) were both Poetry Book Society Choices and shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize.

‘Moniza.. is a skilled storyteller, recounting the extraordinary in the voice of the everyday, so that we accept the miraculous as something we need… London Magazine.

‘The Immigration Handbook (by Caroline Smith) was certainly the most moving and inspiring book of poems I read last year. It really is a major book of political poems; I find it hard to think of a comparably successful achievement in that area’. Bernard O’Donoghue (poet)

Caroline and Moniza will be followed by our traditional Fickle Tupperware Bowl of Fate. Open mic readers selected on a first come, first served basis from those who apply to read.

The event will be streamed via Zoom.  If you would like to join our audience, or be one of our open mic readers let me know soonest at chrys@chryssalt.com

We’ll send you the relevant Zoom link to join nearer the time.

We look forward to seeing you on May 29th  at our fourth digital event of the season. If you’ve ‘been’ before, you’ll know you are in for another Bakehouse treat.

Booking is essential so we know who to ‘admit’.
